Get a drinking glass and put some gin, some salt and some lemon juice in it and mix them together. Then put the diamond (i assume it's in a setting) in the glass and shake the mixture a little. Leave it for about 10 minutes. This combination cleans the diamond and the metal compound without damaging either the stone or the metal.

A good jeweler will have a cleaning kit for a few dollars. I used to have one that came in a jar of cleaner with a little basket.
