Individuals suffering from severe malnutrition or starvation often have swollen bellies because of a lack of protein. It is exacerbated in those who receive carbohydrates without sufficient proteins. Because of this lack, the blood is unable to hold water, and the water is absorbed by the body cells, most notably in the abdominal area. Thus, you see swollen bellies on those suffering from malnutrition; this is particularly pronounced in children because they have a smaller over-all height, and because their bodies require more protein than an adult, pound-for-pound.

Wow...I thought that maybe our country had some hope for its insensitivity and ignorance but you have proved otherwise. I'm sorry to throw out all of these vocabulary words but I guess the Billy Bob School of No-Class didn't teach that!!! The kids on the Sally Struther's shows have distended bellies, a common side effect of starvation. Most people learn that early on, but I'm guessing that you learned how to spit tobacco and shoot possums. Have a nice day!

It's 'normal' for victims of starvation to develop enlarged abdomens...not sure why ...could be some form of ascites where the liver is unable to manufacture enough albumin to keep the blood vessels from leaking liquid into the abdomen...but I'm only guessing...the ascite info is correct...I just don't know if starvation can bring it on.

I really don't know how true this is or not. But I heard a very long time ago that it is because of eating dirt in order to stop the hunger pains that they suffer from.
It's a very sad situation regardless. But whether this is actually the case, your guess is as good as mine.

I remember watching a documentary about corpses and how when they rot the bellies become bloated because of the bacteria that develops inside them and creates deadly gasses . i don't know if this is relevant it could be a possible reason why they have bloated stomachs.
