my friend went for a scan at 5 weeks no heartbeat - then at 6 weeks there was a heart beat , but shes had spotting after going to the loo just when she wiped, it got a little worse the weekend followed by backache and was told she would need another scan to check. So she went along she was now nearly 8 weeks the same nurse did the scan that had done her 5 week one who was abrupt and unhelpful she then stated the baby was still measuring 6 weeks and no heartbeat so she said you will miscarry and told her that the bleeding would get worse other to that she could have it surgically removed (im explainig this brief they were not the exact words) but a day later my friend is just waiting shes had no heavy bleeding yet, how long does it take for the heavy stuff to start - shes now thinking the hospital have made a mistake and the baby is still in there so its ok, ive never been through this so i dont know what advice to give her for comfort.

but normally how long can it take before the heavy bleeding starts, if the baby is no longer alive?

It usually only takes a few days. I'd say a D & C procedure may have to happen if there's no real bleeding for a week or so. It can happen anytime, but I didn't want to wait myself when it happened to me this way. The procedure makes sure that everything is out and then you can have more babies in the future. It happens and I'm sorry to hear it.

I am not sure what to say but I hve a friend that recently went through the same thing except her's stopped growing at 2 weeks but she had been prego for like 3 months she started spotting like your friend but nothing heavy ever came so eventually they gave her some kind of pills to make her go into labor or whatever you would call it they gave her 4 pills and after she took the first one she was at a store and started bleeding heavy she still has the other 3 pills and she told me to take one cause I think that I am pregnant I said hell no but anyway after the bleeding and stuff she had to go to the hospital and get cleaned out. She was off of work for like 3 weeks total for all of this. But if your friend's nurse did not here it at 5 weeks but said the baby was measuring 6 weeks at 8 weeks I would want another exam if I was her. Not to give her any false hope but maybe that nurse just dosen't know what she is doing. Good Luck to you friend and God Bless.

It appears the problem could be with the nurse who did the tests...if at 5 weeks and 8 weeks she heard no heartbeat, but one was found at 6 weeks the problem is the nurse. I am not saying she is wrong, but I wouldn't trust their opinion.
If your friend truly believes in her heart that everything is ok, then she definately needs a second opinion. And she needs to keep asking questions until she is satisfied with the answers. This doesn't mean finding a doctor who will tell her what she wants to hear, but finding a doctor who is prepared to run as many tests as possible until the answers are definate...it may take just another scan, it may take other tests....

I am so shocked at all this D&C talk. I've had 3 miscarriages and 2 were done on my own without D&Cs and boy let me tell you, you'll know when it's happening. All 3 happened a day or two after 12week mark. If you are unsure get another opinion at different imaging center. I am currently 8weeks measuring 6weeks. I was so nice to have a pleasant technician!! Only time can tell what will happen. Good luck!

i'm very sorry for your friend, and I agree to get a second opinion, It is very tough not knowing what's going on. I recently had a miscarriage Sept 1st and I was 12 weeks. I started spotting brown 2 weeks prior and told my Dr. Well, at 12 weeks I went for my checkup and the Dr. told us we heard the heartbeat and it was in fact mine! Dr.s don't always know what's goin on or take care of you the way they should. After my apt. I started spotting red when I went to the bathroom and wiped, then the cramps started getting worse and worse until I went to the ER and they told me my baby was only 8 weeks with no heartbeat. The next day I passed everything on my own. No one told me what to expect, they said I wouldn't even know when it happened! Your friend really needs to get a Dr. who knows whats goin on and then explain to her what to expect. It's a terrible thing to happen and I hope your friend's baby is ok. I will pray for her.

She really needs to get another scan from someone who is going to be helpful and kind. My miscarriage at 7 weeks started with spotting and went to heavy bleeding in a few hours:-(
She should also report that nurse, as someone that insensitive should not be dealing with worried mums.

Your friend needs a second (professional) opinion. Not too many people on Yahoo! Answers are qualified to tell you what to do, so be safe and advise your friend to go visit another doctor. When a miscarriage happens and not all the tissue comes out, it leaves a great risk for infection. Go see a doctor!
