A click is a one kilometre or converted about 2.6 miles. A click is also a Australian slang word for distance or speed. For example, he was driving his car at 100 clicks = 100 kilometres per hours. The Americans adopted our terminology for distance and speed during the Vietnam war so that every allied country's forces were all talk the same language so to speak. Hope this helps.

A click in Nam was a slang term used in setting the distance to target. Closely matched to distances fired in qualifying with a M-16 rifle whose sight adjustment were in meters. as opposed to the sight adjustments on older M-1's and M-14's.
First distance was 100 meters (yards) which you fired off hand (standing up) and rapid fire in sitting position.
Second distance was 200 meters (yards) which was fired in the sitting and kneeling position and rapid fire in the prone position.
Third distance was 500 meters(yards) fired in the prone position.

So instead of saying 100 meters or yards we started using clicks. i.e. 100 meters or yards was 1 click, 400 meters or yards was 4 clicks.
Pilots and cannon cockers (artillery) also started using clicks but instead of it meaning yards for them, It meant Kilometers. The reason for that was it was easier of correlate artillery support and air support with non American troops using clicks instead of kilometers since non American troops use mainly the metric system and we used the English system of miles and yards.
