Depends on the person...I'm a liberal and I am not to fond of illegal immigration. I think it drives down wages and sucks up social services for the citizens who pay into them.

It is a problem. But it is so far from *the* cause of all our economic woes that Republicans make it out to be.

And second, I am sick of people (some Republicans, but some Dems too) who say they are serious about controlling illegal immigration, but only propose solutions that always are going after poor people with dark skin. Beefing up fences and border patrols, chasing after poor people with dogs and guns does not solve the problem ... it just appeals to people with secret or overt racism and hatred of brown-skin people.

If we really want to do something about illegal immigration, then you also have to go after the employers who hire them, and have guest worker programs, and fast-track green card and citizenship programs that provide *legal* alternatives for people wanting to come here and work. And we need to shore up central American economies so that they have opportunities in their own countries.

This is one of the few things that I think Bush has tried to do well. His immigration reform proposal was a multi-pronged approach. However, the Republicans in Congress watered it down ... again, except for fences and prosecution of the immigrant himself.

This is one thing that Bush and Congress probably *will* agree on.

If the jobs aren't here, the illegals won't be either. If you put out an open honey jar you are going to get bees. If the health agency fines the hell out of you for feeding bees, you'll close the jar and the bees won't come around.

The above is the part of the equation that has been ducked for a lot of years.

Not a fan of mass deportation, but we should be doing something about Mexico's economy, and maybe we wouldn't have to build that pointless fence.
