Seperate places to live. And many chores to do.. Maybe just memories of the natural childbirth at the time.

good question! they didn't have any birth control, the ARTIFICIAL way. but they do have it, and it's called breastfeeding =) back then, mothers breastfeed their babies right after they were born, up to perhaps 4 to 5 years of age. doing so signals the body not to release any egg just yet. hey, the mother's body has to have enough energy to feed the child, right? there are definitely other factors as well, such as nutrition and longevity, both acting as natural birth control. several hundred years ago, foods were not as abundant as today. hence, girls don't usually get their menstruation until the age of 15 or 16. also, back then, due to lack medical help and high infections, people tended to live shorter. do the maths: our ancestors don't get to have that much opportunity to reproduce as we are now. hope this helps =)

They really didn't have birth control. But you also have to remember that they didn't have modern medicine. A lot of births ended up as miscarriages or having the baby die at a young age. That's why they got married so young. Life expectancy was not high.

i imagine the work load (combined with the number of affairs that were had...didn't matter back then. you couldn't divorce the man!), plus the fact most people didn't have a very good diet so could've cause numerous early miscarriages.....btw, my great-grandparents had 11 children. ;)
