Most definitely! An engagement ring is to show that you're engaged to the person that gave it to you. If you split up, you're no longer engaged, so the ring HAS to be returned.

Typically, the "rule" is...if he breaks the engagement, she gets to keep the ring. If she breaks the engagement, then she gives the ring back to him.

It's essentially a "contract". The ring is to seal the "contract". So, whomever breaks the contract forfeits the right to the property, in this case the engagement ring.

Honestly, why any woman would want to keep the ring (unless she paid for it, and that does happen), is beyond my comprehension.

First it depends who is doing the splitting up.

Second, from a man's point of view, the ring is a gift and therefore there is no obligation to having it returned.

But ultimately if there was enough of a relationship the keeping or returning of the ring should depend on the specific nuiances of the relationship. Whether there is more respect given by returning or more respect given by keeping, do the right thing.

It depends on who is doing the breaking up. If the man gives the woman the ring and then decides to leave then it is a breach of contract in certain respects and she should keep the ring. If it is the other way around she should give it back.

Legally the ring was a gift and belongs to the woman, morally though it would depend on the situation.

Absolutely, so you can take it back to the store and get what money back you can or cancel the debt. It's a gift conditional upon marriage. Now, if you owe her money for the planned wedding, you'll not get it back until you erase the debt. Do the proper thing in any case!

It depends I guess... if you want it back you should ask if not you can take her to small claims court because it wasn't a gift it was a promise of marriage that has been cancelled. But if you have kids with her leave it be hers. Most guys don't want them back unless they are worth a lot or family air looms.

definitely,,,it was given with the intention of marriage,,as the marriage is no longer going to happen it is only decent to give back the item that signified the engagement in the first place.
