Consciousness or "mind" is analogous to a computer software and the functioning brain is analogous to the computer hardware.
Self awareness is a self referential residual self image of the objective self by the subjective mind. An inward reflection via a virtual reality recreation.

To mangle a quote and put it in the most simplistic terms, "I think, therefore I can." :)
As to your details, I think you come closest to the answer with your last question. The more we ponder on our ability to think and perceive, the more subjective it becomes, until we come up against that ultimate wall, "I believe I am here, because to do otherwise would lead to becoming lost in infinite possibilities." Are we the man dreaming he is a butterfly, or the butterfly dreaming he is a man? We have no true way to know, and at some point we simply have to accept the external input of our senses and move on, or go crazy trying to look at the infinite.

Consciousness is the unconsciousness/dream of the universe. We search for one thing and find the other because that is nature itself and has nothing to do with a complex brain. Human beings are no different than any other animal. Other animals just know there role in nature. Man has lost his way in trying to copy nature ultimately leading to the end of nature itself. Man is trying to play God. Animals and plants are more evolved than man because they aren't dumb as us to double cross what gave us life in the first place. Find the answers you are looking for, in the questions itself. Consciousness is the defined dream of a sleeping undefined nature.

I can only share my thought as a layman.
To me it appears that when the will of the self or soul controls the mind (which in turn controls the physical brain), it is a state of consciousness. Sometimes, the mind is on auto and not being willed by the self - this would perhaps be the sub-conscious state of mind.

Consciousness is really one of the key elements within defining or discussing metaphysics, because it permeates every living thing not only within this dimension but in all dimensions. In higher dimensions, consciousness merges into deeper states of consciousness. It is the same for the soul as it evolves, a greater consciousness is revealed by merging and being more aware.

Let's not complicate things. Consciousness, in a word, is awareness.

Consciousness is the fact that something exists FOR you. As simple as that and as mysterious as that.
