How much? What are you using as a scale? I think one of the many many things that make up marriage could be the safety of women. But then there are all the others like companionship, loyalty, fidelity, sex, and lust is good, someone to spend time with, someone who will deal with your smelly socks, someone who can always ying your yang (however you want that to go). Twenty nine years ago, few months after I graduated high school, I got married and it's been wonderful.

Marriage is not so much for safety reasons, but for security. And it's for both parties, regardless of gender. (Remember, in a few places gay people are actually allowed to have civil unions. So you've got cases where there are only men involved, or only women involved.)

But for heterosexual couples, I don't believe that women benefit more from marriage. But there are plenty of people, men and women, that like to know that they'll wake up every morning with the same person.

It's easier to be part of a team than to go it alone, and especially for couples that are raising children together. And it's not just financial security, or health insurance benefits, either. Some of us commit to each other because we value the idea that our partner won't walk out if or when we become old, fat, ugly, or bald. Or if we are maimed in some horrible accident. Or become gravely ill.

And regarding what Sad Dad had to say: I'm sorry about your experience. I completely get your point. Men really do get a raw deal in custody disputes. The assumption is nearly always that the wife, solely by virtue of her gender, is the more fit parent. Responsible Dads who want to stay involved with child rearing are reduced to ATM status. Just a source of cash, and not much else. Very very sad indeed.

Marriages are made for the emotional security of all partys involved including the children.

The Los Angeles Proscuitors Office did a study that showed 90% of all teenage crimes came from households that had only one parent, and no role models.

Even if a single mom was to wear a strap on, theres simply no way a single mom can show a boy how to be a man.

I would rather think that marriages are made between two people who are in love, and they require the blessing of their Church to consummate the union! The opinion that marriage is used to protect the female from what?Rape? gossip? dizzy spells? lol. It's ludicrous! In a Muslim country? Well! I'm not sure! But a western country? No! Women have too much freedom and Independence to be scared of being single.

I do not agree! Marriages are made for safety of men. This started with Adam When God realized He was lonely and needed a helper. (Genesis 2:20-21)

Well it doesn't save women from the advances of other men, since some guys actually want to go after married women so that's a no go. Suppose getting married could provide health insurance for her, but if she's got a job with health benefits, she doesn't really need to get married. So I'd have to say no, a married woman is no safer than a non-married one.

Well, considering my ex left me, openly slept with another man, at a community camping trip two weeks after leaving, left our son with me for 3 months, and yet the Ventura courts took her word that she was primary caregiver, and have proceeded to rape me financially...yeah, I would say so. It used to be that women got the short end of the stick. Now the pendulum has swung way to the other side, and responsible, loving decent fathers are getting totally screwed.

100 years ago, I think most Americans, including women would agree with that. Since WWII when many women did 'men's jobs' such as working in aircraft factories, and especially since ERA when women fought for job and political equality--I think most women, not all, would scoff at that idea. "You've come a long way Baby!" now you get lung cancer at a rate similar to men.

no. marriages are made to protect the children of the man from being kicked to the curb when he gets tired of his wife. And with the incidence of spousal bause in the world, there is little protection in marriage for women. Most women who are murdered are killed by their husbands.
