My little boy also had a cold when he was only a couple of weeks old. I spoke to my health visitor and she told me to get saline drops from the chemist. I just put a drop up each nostril and it seemed to help clear some of the mucus.

I am a ped. RN the best thing you can do for a little one with the stuffy and congestion is to get some Johnson and Johnson vapor rub for babies and put it on their bare chest. I also got the lavender bath and give a nice warm bath before bed. Then put a humidifier next to their bed. You also can get saline bullets at the pharmacy and put some up the babies nose this will break it up then use a suction bulb and get it out. If the head congetion goes on for a while, take her in. Babies have a tendency to get ear infections from head colds and the doc will give you antibiotics for an ear infection it will aslo clear up the head cold my little one just went through this. Good luck.

If you have a radiator in the room you can put a couple drops essential oil on the hot surface to evaporate. Also you could use some on a tissue but be sure to tie it where babe cannot reach it at all - it must not get onto the skin or into eyes.
The other essential oil for babies is lavender very useful for sunburn (they burn so easily!) and also as first aid for ear aches - until you can get to see the doctor.

You should be able to get saline nose drops from any chemist. These are perfectly safe being made of salt water - they just unblock the nose for a few minutes so the infant can feed or get off to sleep and you can't overdose. Lots of people do use karvol etc on small babies but the concern is that they could aggravate their breathing, so I wouldn't advise it. The saline should help.

The Boots healthcare assistants are right!
Olbas and Karvol can cause babies under 3 months old to stop breathing, the fumes are pretty powerful. There is nothing for under 3 months old available to buy for a 5 week old with a cold, all you can do is keep her head higher than her body when she is lying down, and possibly try saline drops if her nose is blocked and causing problems breathing.

Karval and albas oil is fine as long as u don't put it to close to the baby and make sure u use the write dose. I normally put a pillow or blanket under the mattress of the crib, i find that being propped up helps them.

I am in Australia, so I can't give the same advice I would use here. We have a medication that can be used from 1 month old, called Panadol (don't know if you have it) .
My first got a cold at two weeks old and the gp told us there was nothing we could do except keep his fluids up. He instructed that we give him a bottle of boiled water (cooled of course) between feeds. Apparently, new borns need a drink as well, because the breast milk is food...I didn't know this until then. So basically, keeping their fluids up, and letting them sleep more (if they will)...and it'll take time.

My daughter had a bad cold at 2 weeks old and it was annoying that she couldn't have anything for it. I tried the Saline drops but they didn't do a lot. I was told by the chemist that I shouldn't use any vics etc as it can effect young babies lungs. Hope this helps :-)

when my baby had a cold at that age i put olbas oil on a handkerchief and tied it to the moses basket and rails of the cot. I was also told to tilt the matress at the head end so the baby is not flat just a little tilted!! It worked.

I would recommend buying a humidifier. That is what we done for our daughter when she was a couple of months old. It worked a treat and we still use it if she is chocked up (she's 5 now). Works for all the family, is not harmful in any way and is well worth the investment. You can get them at argos:
