It so totally depends on what genre you're interested in.
If you're into action/adventure, try Stealth or Top Gun. Stealth was much better on the big screen, but the flight sequences are awesome and is very reminiscent of Top Gun, on of my all time favorite movies.
If you want Sci-Fi, I recommend Serenity or I, Robot. Serenity was the movie of the flop-Joss Whedon show Firefly. And I, Robot has a very hot looking, rather snarky Will Smith in it (good Asimov story too)
If you want a comedy/drama/action flick, I highly recommend Boondock Saints. It was a little-name, no-show movie that has gotten a bit of a cult following. It has Sean Patrick Flannery, Billy Connely and Wilem DeFoe. Not gonna tell you much about it, but it is increasingly funny the more times you watch it.
There's millions of movies to choose from, these are just a very slight few of my favorites.

Fave movies to own... let's see, what genre are you interested in? Comedy, horror, drama, war, musical...
I own one too many and that being said, here are some in my collective I enjoy time and time again.
Finding Nemo- I know it sounds corny, but I do like the voices.
Clerks- hysterically funny; I worked in a convenience store so I can appreciate Kevin Smith's writing.
Miss Congeniality- I adore Sandra Bullock in this.
Chicago- great music, all around good flick.
Secondhand Lions; great for the whole family.
Body Heat- put the kids to bed. woo.
Good luck in your decision!

There aren't any movies that I can't live without. Having said that, my all-time favorite is The English Patient. I highly recommend it to everyone.
