It started as the Federalist party versus the Democratic Republicans. Once the federalists dwindled into nothingness, the Democratic Republicans were left as a single party and it wasn't long until the liberals and conservatives within the group caused it to splinter into what is now known as the Democrats and the Republicans. The names are arbitrary, its the ideology behind each (Reps = Cons, Dems = Libs)

Well why would you ask a question based on political stances instead of asking Why does America have two parties (republic and democrat) when they're really the same thing? Well to answer your question here the republicans use to be a good thing back in the late 1700's and through early 1900's if I am correct. There were no democrats just radicals, as they were called when they did not want justice to take place. The democratic and republican party specify a significance in ideas in ways that they are opposed to each other i think a well educated man would know this by now. The republic is due to a "Public" understanding of the US Constitutions, Articles of Confederation, and Bill Of Rights. Now if that's redundant then I don't know what is.

What do u mean by "the USA has a republican party when the country is a republic already? This country is founded on tradition which is a conservative stand. Democracy did come into play with the democrats, in a way (they want change..), but we have democracy to keep things fair. Rebundant, no.

They're just names of political parties that's all. They could be called the "blue" party or "Bob's" party. Doesn't matter. Doesn't mean anything. We also have several other political parties: independent, green, libertarian, peace and freedom, etc.
