Y'all must be very young, because for decades the Dems controlled the house and the Senate. What was accomplished in the past by this nirvana? What do you think will be magically created by a power hungry group now that the power has been acquired? My hunch is that nothing will be done.

what funny is all these so called democrats that hate bush and think he is going to be put in check. (thats what they think checks and balances are.) fact is Bush isnt a conservative in a majority of sense in the word. The fact about checks and balances is that the judiciary branch has way to much power and the democrats will further this and lessen the checks and balances. As far as executive and legislative, we have shown for the last two decades that they are balanced very well since they are all the same. Two party systems dont work. Its been proven in every foriegn state that has applied this view. I just hope we fix that before its too late. man how can so many of you be so uniformed? rubber stamp. lol

Bush and the Republicans have done the Iraq War, Every Child Left Behind, Trillions of National Debt, Tons of Environmental Damage, Division of the Country into anger mobs of shouting idiots, Destruction of our Reputation as a Country, Redistribution of the Income upwards, the grand dismantling of the Constitution of the United States with NSA spying on citizens and the warranties recording of citizens conversation and finally the end of the necessity for a person to be informed of the charges against him/her and the end of the protections against torture.
Aside from these small insignificant problems there was also the Secret Prisons and Secret detainment of suspects from around the world without informing the countries who were have persons arrested by our CIA and imprisoned without legal procedures including informing the America Senate and Congress in general.
Checks and Balances are about acting legally, in America and overseas. But then, who really cares about legalities?

The decades the Dems controlled are the decades America grew in into the greatest, most powerful, freest, most advanced and wealthiest country in the world. In less than 6 years the Repubs divided America, exhausted it's riches, destroyed the economy, crushed the infrastructure and turned half the world against us and show no remorse.

And sonny, I may act young and dumb, but you may not live to be as old as I am.

I'm not young, that's for sure. But I do know this - a rubber stamp Congress gives a President more power than a checks and balances Congress. In this atmosphere, with this war, that is a much needed shift in power. I don't expect it to be nirvana, I am not that naive. But I do expect that now the President will be forced to behave in a more bipartisan manner. That in itself is a huge relief.

Your point fails to take into account the automaton nature of these new Republicans that simply rubber stamped every part of Bush's agenda. Democrats are not brainless automatons. They refused to lock-step to the wishes of both the Clinton and Carter Administrations. You better believe there will be checks and balances now and the country will cease to be a Fascist regime, corporately controlled.

Having checks and balances means that many of the more idiotic bills will not be passed into law now. Not to mention, some of the more idiotic things won't be done.

You want some examples? Try the Patriot Act, No Child Left Behind, and the disastrous tax cuts, for example the removal of the Estate Tax.

It is because, quite simply, the checks and balances ARE back! There will be no more 'rubber stamp' Congress that allows the administration do anything it wants - Bush will finally have to use those impressive chimp-like ears of his, and quit gutting the Constitution for his mad, religious-fervour inspired policies.

It is a fantastic day for democracy!

If the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the government are all of the same political leaning, as they have been, there can be no "checks and balance".
The down side of "checks and balance" is of course, deadlock if one of these branches is diametrically opposed to the other two.

start reading "americas FIRST LADIES"
youll see why our system was designed and even exploited to and for the good of the (us) people. believe it or not, the system was originally sculpted to be a bottleneck, so that status quoe prevailed and change was slow and resisted. (due to slow communications education, and dont fix the breaking thing till its broken)
i wont spoil it for you, but interesting read. you wouldnt believe what they did to pollute(haha) the POTOMAC.
your jaw is gonna drop.
