1.Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run it once daily before shutting down your computer. It removes all the trash files that are created while surfing through the net. Use its Issues section once every 2 weeks to delete all the unused registry keys. If you have a lot of Auto Start entries, then you can remove them from its Tools>Startup. But keep the important ones like firewall and the real-time protection shields of your anti-virus and anti-spyware.
2.Keep a decent anti-virus, a strong firewall and two anti-spyware in your computer. Always keep the real time protection shield(or resident shield) of the anti-virus and one of the anti-spyware active. Update them and scan your computer once every week with both the anti-spyware and once every 2 weeks with anti-virus. I have given the links to some free and good anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall; get them all:
AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/set...
AdAware SE:- http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download/CPF_Setup_2.0.0.1.exe
Never keep two anti-virus or firewall on a single system. If you are already using a good anti-virus or firewall, then you need not download the corresponding one.
3.Keep a virtual memory booster as an auto-start entry. It frees the clogged RAM. I use RAM Booster, which is very effective. Here is the link to download it:
http://www.download.com/RAMBooster/3000-2086_4-10028673.html
After downloading it, follow the steps:
*.Cilck on Edit>Options and tick the follow options:
1.Set auto optimisation on
2.Show CPU usage
3.Start minimised
4.Launch automatically at start up
Also, increase the auto optimisation level and 'Mb of RAM to free at auto level' as per your requirement.
4.Keep at least 35% of your C: free. Transfer all the music, image and video files to other drives.
5.Defragment your hard drives(especially C:) once every month. To defrag, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment.
All these will most certainly speed up your computer. Good Luck!
:-)

1.) If u have Norton anti virus installed please please remove it it's so so so very bad it makes the PC very very very slow even slower then a tortoise...try to use AVG or Mccafee or even some other better antivirus softwares which are lighter...norton is just too loaded with many unwanted stuff.
2.) Go to file forum download a software called Ad Aware Pro. and one more is CCLEANER and run these softwares after installing them properly when u run these programs these clean ur computer off the unwanted registration keys generated by the softwares or the internet files that we open freeing the Pc off the malicious registration keys which occupy the disk space.
3.)Then try to remove some of the unwanted softwares which u don't use empty the disk space as much as u can by installing only those softwares that u truly need to use rest just remove them from the control panels add or remove option....and if still ur PC is slow then only one thing will help and thats
4.) getting ur PC upgraded with a fast RAM or a very FAST PROCESSOR now the best thing is investing in RAM and for starters try defragmentation for this process will stack all ur programs and utilities in order and the space in ur hard disk will be nicely stacked and thus it seperates out the free disk space which then lets the PC run faster as it doesn't need to keep on checking for the installed softwares each n everytime u start ur PC or save a file....Organise ur PC accordingly and it'll surely run faster....
5.) DO DEFRAGMENTATION just once u need not keep on doing it as it's really very very time consuming if ur PC is loaded with many softwares.

The Best solution for your question is to download system tweaks like system mechanics, this is a good stable software that monitors ur system on each start up and several other times, the minute u restart windows, u WILL see the difference i used it and still do on my old computer, not fast only had a max processor speed of 450Mhz and had memory upgrades upto 384mb(3x128mb chips). but the software did helped,
So What You Can Do:
1. Either do memory upgrades, hardware and software.(Add memory chips)
2. Use System tweaks
(which can be found at www.download.com)
3. DO clean ups of ur hard drives regularly !
4. Don't load junk software.(even if u do u should have the system restore feature on, and have a good; for virus, spyware, adware, trojan, worms use(AOL Active virus Shield, its better than Norton MCAfee Avast and AVG BELIEVE ME !!); now for hackers, loggers, dialers(use firewalls such as jetico, Zone Alarms(have their own probs) or use filesclab(BEST!!)); EVERY THING can be found at www.download.com.
Best of luck with Speeding up and Clean up and safety !
But remember safety first!
(CAUTION ! these things can speed up the computer but then slow it down aswell if its clogged with stuff!) Choose wisely live well !

Ok, here I give you a list of simple steps which, you have to perform with patience to see your PC speed go boost:
1. Run Disk clean-up. Then delete unused files. (start>program>accessories>sys... tools> disk clean-up)
2. Check for disk errors. (right click on a disk-drive>properties>tools >error checking, then restart)
3. Run disk defragmenter.
4. Delete cookies. (you can do it from your browser options: tools>internet options)
5. Delete cache or temporary files. (you can do it from your browser options) or, click on 'start", 'run', type 'temp' then click ok. Whatever shows up, just delete.
6. Delete all history files. (you can do it from your browser options, or, CTRL + H, then delete)
7. Empty recycle bin.
8. Delete unused icons & short-cuts from anywhere including desktop.
9. Uninstall any software or game that you don't use or use rarely.
10. Delete temporary internet files. (you can do it from your browser options: tools>internet options)
11. Delete all recent files. (click on start, click run, then type "recent", delete all the files which show up)
12. Run a full virus scan. If any threat found, eliminate that completely.
13. Run a software which can remove any spyware or adware.
Like: Ad Aware, Windows defender etc.
If you did these all at the same time, restart your computer. All these to be done once in a week if possible, depending on the frequency of use of your PC.
* Updating: (Needed only when updates are available)
14. Update your Windows by installing latest updates.
15. Update your audio & video drivers.
16. Update softwares, browsers, games that you use.
In your question you probably meant that you don't want to download and install any software. I understand you are not a computer geek, but trust me, there are some simple but extremely helpful softwares which you don't have to be an expert to use. You just download it, and install it, and run it once in a week. To remove spywares and adwares (main culprits to slow down your PC) you have to use some softwares. If you change your mind and want to use, let me give you a few links of 100% free but excellent softwares which will rid your PC of vicious spy and adwares:
