My fiance and I are seriously considering moving to Toronto (in Canada, no Ohio), though we're not sure if it will be sooner or later. Either way, we could use some advice. What is the job market like in Toronto? What is the cost of living? How long must one live there to receive the benefits of being Canadian (ie, healthcare)? What is the art scene like?
Most importantly, how much does such a move cost? We live in Michigan, by the way. Preemptive thanks for the assistance.

You'd have to ask yourself why you would want to move there in the first place. Real Estate is expensive. Most people live 45 min + outside of Toronto and commute where the housing market is more reasonable. The employment prospects are good. The art scene, as well as many different 'scenes' in Toronto are excellent. It's one of the most thriving cities in the world.
I'm not sure how long it would take to qualify for things like health care. I'm sure it wouldn't take long - refugee applicants I believe get immediate medical care while they go through the process. Best to look at the Government of Canada website at www.canada.gc.ca and the Government of Ontario webstie at www.gov.on.ca to find out the legal aspects of the move.

As U.S. citizens, you need to clarify all the tax issues and citizenship issues. Passport rules are changing, will be required by 2008.

I'm not sure I would recommend moving to Canada without employment. You'd be competing with their citizens so you'll need to do your homework regarding hiring issues. Don't expect "benefits", unless you're already Canadian.

Contact your states workforce commission and find out if they can help you. I'm sure it's a common practice in Michigan so you're definitely not the first to ask these questions.

Good luck...

I recently moved from South Africa going to Toronto, but ended up in Winnipeg. It's very hard getting any benefits or work (unless you have a work permit). And you have to be in Canada for atleast three years to be landed....from what I've seen, Canadians are very strict with the law. They do everything by the book.
