Of course the family plays the greatest role in it's prevention. We throw our kids into poorly funded schools and expect the teachers to teach them morals and ethics but when they do we slam them with a law suit. We want our kids to be chaste and wait for marriage but we show them movies and videos that glorify or make fun of sex. We want our kids to be polite but we flip off the other driver for diving too slow. We want our kids to respect authority but we cheat on our taxes. We want our kids to respect us but all we do is tell them how bad they are.
No wonder our children are resorting to gangs. It is a place where they feel they fit in even if they know it isn't right. It is a place where they feel power that society has taken away from them and it is a place where they feel the respect that the world refuses to give our youth today.
The youth of the world need to be nurtured and taught what is right and wrong. They can't get that on the streets. We need to show them that they are loved at home so they don't go looking for love on the streets. We need to show them the respect they deserve as future leaders of the world and the ones who will be taking care of us in our old age.
A strong and loving family is THE BEST way to prevent gangsterism.

Family does play a role but not a big one!
In terms of percentage, may be 20% or so.
The main active role is played by Society.

I can classify accordingly:

Society: 50%
Close circles like friends etc: 30%
Family: 20%

Class is the biggest prevention against gangsterism. Gangsters are just low class thugs and should have nothing except shame for the little kids they shoot in drive-buys. They are not even professional, just a bunch of confused little boys with bling.

Undoubtedly. Most of these anti social elements do not have any family bond. They had not enjoyed the warmth and the support of the family. They go astray. They have no value system and emotional strength to prevent them from indulging in crimes.

Yes, definitely; prevention of many more things. The family is the basic unit of society, it it fails to do its function of molding its family members into good persons, then it is more likely they could also turn into bad citizens. Unless that family changes into doing its primary , ideal function.
