They don't eat in the womb. All the nutrients that a baby needs are supplied by the placenta via the umbilical cord. The placenta also oxygenates the baby's blood and takes the carbon dioxide out of the blood. The placenta is a marvelous thing!

Though the amniotic fluid present in the womb is swallowed and brought into the lungs it's not the primary source of nutrition. The umbilical chord provides a baby with nutrition. It's an opening in the babies abdomen which turns into the belly button after birth. It exchanges nutrients between the mother and babies blood stream.

The mother usually leaves some crackers in between her legs at night. The baby reached its hand out, and grabs them. Then when the baby poops, well obviously the mommys belly grows.
