Sleep! I always get cold sores when I'm exhausted.

And, this isn't really a home remedy, but it is OTC. Ambesol (the stuff they use for baby's teething pain) is great. It numbs the sore spot, disinfects, and generally helps heal those things.

Try and eat your veggies, too. Cold sores are often a cry for help from the body. They are caused by the herpes virus, and can break out for no reason -- but often break out because of stress (which is also made worse by lack of sleep and a poor diet). You can never get rid of the herpes virus once you have it, but sometimes you can stop it from going active.

L-lysine. You can get this at most grocery stores. It's a simple amino acid that helps heal and prevent cold sores. Also, if you feel the tingling and heat that signals a cold sore try putting ice or a popsicle on the place that is hot. This can also prevent them.
