Hmm, you're asking for infection and scarring and other unpleasantness if you pierce yourself - I realize that some people do so successfully but do you really want to take that chance? Please consider going to a professional piercer, not only will they be a whole lot safer and infinitely more sanitary than anything you can do at home, but given that they're trained in piercing they're also a lot more likely to be able to get you that piercing with a minimal amount of pain ...

Don't pierce your own lip. That is highly risky and you could cause yourself a lot of harm. There are a reason that piercers have to apprentice under someone before qualifying to become an actual professional. You would need to learn about sterilization techniques, anatomy, piercing techniques, equipment, jewelry, etc. first. You can't just put a needle in a lighter for 30 seconds and stick it through your lip. You're just asking for a massive infection and a gross deformed lip.
If you've already had your lip pierced (hopefully by a professional) and ice isn't working, use ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory medication. This will reduce swelling. Also try doing a sea-salt soak twice a day. That always helped ease the swelling for me (and helped with keeping the piercing clean).
To do a sea salt soak:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap.
- Place about a pinch of non-iodized sea salt in a small disposable cup (like those that you'd get for your bathroom to rinse after brushing your teeth or for use with mouthwash) or a shotglass.
- Add hot water (has to be hot, but not so hot that you'd burn yourself) to the cup. Fill the cup about 1/2 to 3/4 full or the shotglass nearly to the top. The water should be no saltier than your tears.
- If you can (and it does take some practice), put the cup right over the piercing, even if that means bending into an awkward position to get the cup where it's not spilling, holding it against your skin, and leaning back to a "normal" position.
- If the cup doesn't work (spilling or really weird angle of the piercing), soak a cotton ball in the solution from the cup and hold that over the piercing.
- Soak the piercing for about 5 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry with unused/clean towel (used towels carry TONS of bacteria - I usually use a paper towel as it doesn't leave residue/lint).
Why use sea salt? Sea salt will assist in balancing the pH levels of your skin, to prevent infection-causing bacteria from growing around and in your piercing. It's not a 100% guarantee that it will completely prevent an infection, but it DOES definitely help. It also helps loosen "crusties" that can build up around your piercing. Why not just plain table salt? Sea salt is best because it does not contain iodine, as most table salt does. Non-iodized table salt will work, if you cannot find sea salt, as it has the same chemical makeup as sea salt (they're just processed in different ways). The "non-iodized" portion is the important part. Iodine will overly dry your skin and will hinder the balancing of the pH levels. You can find it at your local grocery store in the baking aisle or in any health food store.
Other points to remember:
- Don't touch your piercing other than to do a daily sea salt soak and/or wash the skin around the outside. The less you touch your piercing, the less chance of infection.
- Don't rotate/move the jewelry.
- Do not use Bactine, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, etc. to clean around the piercing. These products are too harsh and will cause more harm than good. The only thing you need to use is regular Dial antibacterial soap (the orange stuff) or if you want something less harsh, look for an antimicrobial soap like Satin or Provon. Wash it ONCE a day, if that, usually in the shower is the best.
If you have any further questions, feel free to drop me a line :)

Go to a professional piercer...period.
Besides...it's a freaking HOLE in your lip. It's supposed to hurt. If it didn't, what would the accomplishment be? One of the basic tenets of piercing is that you've faced significant pain and have a piece of jewelry to show for the ordeal as a badge of success. If you want a painless fashion accessory, get a new necklace.
Face the pain, and be proud that you did. However, doing it yourself is a double edged sword. It is its own accomplishment to do it yourself and have something to show for it. Long live safety pins (irony, no?), punk rock, and taking your own body into your own hands. The flipside is that if you're not paying attention to disinfection and sanitization, then you risk infection, scarring, oozy pussy nasty drippy pain, and maybe worse. Then again, that's so hardcore in and of itself.
More important... think about it for a few minutes and decide what sounds least idiotic.

Well, with any piercing, there is going to be pain. Unfortunetly, ice really does not work to reduce pain very well. Ice is better to reduce the swelling and pain AFTER the piercing. As long as you use a clamp and hold it tight enough, use a hollow needle to string the jewelry through and boil the all the instruments first to reduce bacteria, you should be just fine. Remember to go through the front and not inside out

Do you want an ugly scar and a possible infection? Forget about doing this. Someday you will have to get a good job and you will have a mark on your face. Beside that, piercing is so 90's. It's over, dude.

Obviously you've already done it since you said ice didn't seem to work. Pierce your nads & then see what real pain is. Not that I know but, logic says that when you pierce skin, it's gonna hurt. If you're that worried about pain, either get totally drunk or stoned when you do.
