I'm not sexually active and cancer runs in my family. Nevertheless I don't go for pap smears or pelvic exams. But one time I had spotting so my doctor suggested she performed a pelvic exam (you know, "the works"). I know it is for my benefit. But it hurt like hell and was extremely uncomfortable (yes, we are all made different). And yes, no matter what they tell you, I felt violated (even though she was a woman). After all, who would want someone shining a light in your ****** and starts poking around? It just isn't natural! And I hate when other women think of you as crybaby for making a big deal out of it!
As for the rear-poking, not all doctors do that. As a matter of fact, I SELDOM (if not never) hear about it. Perhaps the doctor felt it was needed because of her age. At 61, the risks of colon cancer are high. But what he did won't even help at all. The doctor should have suggested a colonoscopy instead, as that would have been more appropriate.

There are several problems here. One, the nurse is not supposed to leave even if the doctor is female. They should know better than this.
A long time ago doctors used to check the septum between the anus and vagina. They did this by placing one finger in the anus and one in the vagina to palpate the wall between the two. There is no validity or reason to do this test. If the doctor is older and still practices this technique, then it could just be a very unfortunate misunderstanding and communication. Doctors are supposed to stay up to date on these things though.

It's a part of the exam. I can't remember what test it's called, but I think it has to do with colon cancer, or to check for any abnormalities. I think it's just called a rectal exam.
You have to think logically on this: No one is going to put their finger there if they don't need to - at least not in a doctor's office on a 61 year old woman. Have you ever thought how many pap smears that doctor does each day?
If she felt violated, she needs to talk to the doctor and be educated on it. Don't be so fast to jump to an attorney and sue them, thinking it's illegal. It IS a very personal, uncomfortable test, but we all gotta get it done! (well, all women).
At 61 years old, she should already be comfortable with pap smears, unless she has gone so long without one. If it were a young girl going in for her first pap, I could understand the concern and worry because she would not know or expect that, but 61 years old?? Here is one of many websites that will explain pap smears and other tests they do:

Did you ask the Dr. for her reasoning in doing this? Sometimes, my doctor has done things - not like this -but usually if I just ask questions things make more sense. I certainly haven't had something like this happen. You need to stand up for yourself - and say - what are you doing now? Doctors are supposed to tell you what they are doing, how it's going to feel and what the purpose is. Sounds like a standard procedure done in a questionable way - the nurse should have been there and she should have been telling you what was going on regardless of how standard the procedure is.

Yes I felt violated and I never went back, the last one I had was when I was like 14 or 15 and now I'm 18. I went in and I felt like crying because I was scared, then the lady gave me the gown. I changed and when she was doing it the nurse joked and goes "ill give you the baby one" meaning the silver thing they put in me, there was a big one and smaller one. Then she did it and afterwards when I was walking out she tells my mom "she made some noise" like I guess because it hurt I made a noise, but is that my fault. Ever since I am tramatized to go back and when I think about it it makes me sad. I never want to go back but I want kids:(

I just had my ob/gyn.. and i asked her specifically why its done.
Her answer was because the ovaries or more to back of you pelvis they can better feel for them especially if your overweight and it anythings wrong they can tell immediately.
Its very uncomfortable. Put a nurse should never leave a female patient in a room with a male dr it is prohibited under the rules of medical law.

I believe this is procedure ... yes. I think your doctor is trying to be complete with the exam. If this makes you uncomfortable ... you have the right to tell the Doctor you don't want the backside done. This is your right... it is your body. You don't have to consent to any procedure or any tests you feel is not needed! This is your right! Ask your doctor's sec. or nurse for a copy of your rights as it should be displayed on the door or walls of your Doctor's office.

After a certain age, and/or if there are other indications, an rectal exam is quite normal.
See this site for specific details...
