Run the right one. ;)

There's one that runs in 32-bit mode and one that doesn't - run at all as far as I can tell...

Do a search and see if you have more than one copy of regedit*.exe.

If you do, see which one appears to be good (I generally check the file properties and see if it has a version to tell if it's corrupted or not). Well, if you only have one - check the properties anyway.

Regedit32.exe in XP is just a stub that runs regedit.exe (it's for NT compatibility I'd assume). See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/141377
The one that I have that works (just double-checked) is version 5.1.2600 (sp2).

Anyway, you may have one from a prior version of windows laying around or a corrupted one.

I've seen this before. I would try SFC /scannow.

Followed by a SFC /purge if that doesn't work.

Oh! Logged in as admin - that's a good point!
I - er probably wouldn't have noticed that...

sounds like the DLL's on your equipment at the instant are not precise linked in case you're utilising XP professional, then this sounds like a substantial difficulty. i may be susceptible to do a restoration set up. What OS are you utilising?
