We've all been there, honey.

You're just out of school/your parents' house and you're looking for a pad to call your own. No big whoop, just a place for your futon and where you can walk around naked without worrying about other people. But you're a newbie and they are going to scrutinize you, right?

Perhaps, but it's not that tough.

Landlords will be looking for a two things:
1) can you pay, and
2) are you going to trash the place

The good news is that you're not buying the place - just renting. You don't need much "credit" to rent an apartment. Unless you've done something bad to really screw up your credit (e.g bankruptcy, default on credit cards), you have a good a chance as anyone. Many, but not all landlords, look at credit scores. Those that don't often ask for 1st and last month's rent plus a deposit in lieu.

The #1 thing you can do to improve your chances of getting rented to is a JOB. This will show if you can pay.

The #2 thing you can do to improve your chances is to look respectable. Wear clean, pressed clothes when you go look at the place. Lose the attitude for the visit and be on your best behavior. Nobody wants some who "looks irresponsible". Once it's yours, then you can play what you want, do what you want (and when you want) and wear what you want (or not wear).

Good luck.

Every renter had to start somewhere.

Make sure you have all the money for the deposit and first months rent up front and that you can afford the rent and everything else you will have to pay once you are out on your own. It costs more than you think, so go for the lower end of what you think you can afford.

The three things that are most important to landlords are 1) you pay on time and in full, 2) you take care of the place, and 3) you don't disturb them or the neighbors. Focus on how responsible, neat and quiet you are and you shouldn't have a problem.

The decision to rent or not rent a property to any individual is up to the owner. If you have a friend, co-worker or relative who knows someone with an apartment for rent, that is your best bet. Ask if they will give you a referral and you should have no problem at all.
