I'm in VA, and despite a Senate win, our nasty little anti-gay amendment passed. We're sorta screwed down here, since discrimination (and not just a marriage ban, either,) is now written into our constitution. I'm sad, but I still feel good about the election. Do ya'll think that the tides are about to turn? Anyone feel just a little more hopeful now?

Yes, and no. Democrats endorsed the "Defense of Marriage Act" and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"; both of which are bad laws for gay people.

The courts and legislatures will be the ones to overturn state discrimination laws. We still don't have any federal protections for fair housing or employment, let alone our relationships.

Time will tell.

First off, you have my deepest sympathies. I used to live in Virginia as well and I have to say, I'm so glad I don't live there any longer. Your state is notorious for it's inhumane treatment of lesbians and gays.
But, on a more positive note, and even though the previous poster is correct to a point...(ie Democrats backing "don't ask, don't tell" as well as "DOMA") Remember those measures were the stab in the back by Clinton, who has since said he regrets those decisions. I do believe the tides will slowly but surely change for the better.
Maybe not tomorrow, or even the next day, but eventually and steadily.
I truly feel now that it's only a matter of time.

I feel a lot more hopeful, but then I live in a more progressive, enlightened state. I can't imagine what it must be like to live in a place surrounded by such throwback, knuckle-dragging goons. Your choices of course are to stay and try to teach them some humanity or flee to a place where they don't need to be taught.

First-move just a bit north to MD, things are a bit better there.
Second- We have 2 more yrs. of monkey man to put up with.
Third- As much as I would like to feel hopeful-I am not going to hold my breath.

Anyone who thinks the conservative Democrats who are winning elections are friends to the gay community is sorely mistaken.

It's a mental disorder, plain and simple. You'll never see a queer without a screwed up up-bringing
