What if in the future technolgy makes books more accesible, and books could be downloaded or rented through the internet. And imagine that everybody would have a computer, would libraries even have purpose. Also disinclude dvds, cds because those shoudn't be in a library in the 1st place.

There's just something about a book that is so much easier to read. I take classes online and I often print out material so I can highlight the important sentences while studying because having something tangible that I can feel and mess with makes it easier for me to learn. Staring at a screen for too long gives me a headache and messes with my eyes. I love my local library and really enjoy taking my daughter there. Unfortunately, I do see this becoming a reality but for me it would be a very sad one.

And, one important fact is that with the Internet, if the Open Book project is allowed to continue, then we will see and hear of books that we would never have known existed!

The entire works of mankind can be databased for our research, and so that they can be sought in book stores and libraries for us to read!

Yes, there is a place for libraries. And, librarians everywhere are incorporating computers and other modern technologies to make a more fulfilling experience for us!

My County homeowner taxes (We pay about $120 per year for library support on our home taxes!) support this effort.

Yes.

I doubt technology would be so advanced as to enable you to receiev so much info. on your ipod.

Besides, students still need a quiet place to study, do homework.

Kids who wana read books physically need a place to go to. And what about those who can't afford computers? (There are kids like that)

Have you forgotted cds, vcds, Dvds and the other stuff available there?

So you see, libraries are a must.

There will always be libraries as long as there are best-selling authors out threre.

Downloading takes up space on your computer which is inconvinient and a hassle. Books aren't the only thing available from the libarary. You are forgetting that they also supply audio books, music cds, dvds, and vhs. They are free to borrow, but to own something you have to pay. That's why we can't just KEEP our library books, even if it's on our computer...

just another kind of a quiet place to read and relax for a while
and to check out a book so you dont havta buy it.
also a place to study if most places you live and spend time in are too noisy, distracting.
