One of the best places is the salvation army. My co-worker is on the board for the local salvation army and they have been taking applications for "needy" families on Thursday for the past month. Also if you have a church family talk to your church family to see if they sponsor "needy" families during the holidays. Find out where your local food bank is and talk to them. Sometimes school organizations will take on this task. When I was in High School I was on the dance squad and we adopted some needy families. We called the salvation army and got the names of a few families and gave them big gift baskets for Christmas.
Good for you for thinking ahead! Good Luck!

It would be helpful to mention the place or country where the needy family resides.
