kazakstan?

Question

can anyone tell me what it is like in kazakstan? it seems like a beautiful, peaceful place to travel to/in, and while simple and undeveloped, it is not poor or corrupt

Kazakhstan is a beautiful place. Though, having been a part of the former Soviet Union, it is as you say "simple and undeveloped". Though there are people there that speak English, it is probably not the most tourist friendly place without knowing the language. Don't know where you get your information, but corruption abounds in Kazakhstan as in all central Asian states. Although it is rich through natural resources the population is poor and a large portion of them live in poverty - due to the corruption of those in power. As to peaceful, due to the corruption and poverty a large mob of 'peaceful' Kazakh people recently rioted and killed 20 + ex-pats (mostly Turkish people) in a coastal town on the Caspian sea.

Although beautiful in places you have to be careful as large sections of the country were used in Soviet times as nuclear test grounds, and radiation kills people living in the surrounding areas even now.

So visit by all means but please be prepared for what you will experience and do not go there with rose tinted glasses, as they will be stolen from you along with your wallet!
