That's how I met my husband and a few friends.
There's no shame in meeting people over the internet if you're careful. It DOES open many, many doors!

Three of my favorite friends are people I'd initially gotten to know over the internet, either via an IM program and/or in a forum. While you really -do- need to be careful about just whom you meet up with and where, it certainly -can- be a highly positive experience. I love getting to connect with folks who have the same types of interests as me, sometimes it seems like I have so little in common with the folks I work with or otherwise encounter on a day-to-day basis - and admittedly I can be a little shy around people at first, so getting to know them first in a relatively "pressure free" environment such as the internet provides really has helped me immensely ...

I went paintballing with someone I met online. I also met up with a girl who went to my college. Just be careful. There are plenty of creeps. Meet in a public place.

I have met 2 girls that I chatted with on the internet. 1, dated her for a few weeks. She weas a nice person, just didn't work out.
2nd girl, met her 1 time, didn't have that spark. 7 years later I still chat with her from time to time.
