I don't think it's a simple decision for most people. I think it's something that comes with age. When you have decided what is correct for you is when you no longer worry about weather or not what you're doing is the right thing in someone else's eyes. That's when you stop caring about what others think you should be doing.

I posted this response to another question, but I think it answers your question too.
The first thing you can do is stop and consider for a moment that every single person you encounter is 100% as human as you are. Seeking to understand what unites all of us as people is extremely important. Understanding this unity is key in understanding our differences. Once you realize just how human you are, and just how human we ALL are, it is far easier to accept that which makes you different or unique. Then you realize, it is those very things that make you interesting, intriguing, or attractive to others. Embrace your unique identity. Embrace the possibility that someone won't like you, because chances are they wouldn't be someone you would like either, and that's a great thing. It makes the connections you make with people so much more significant and meaningful. Being comfortable with who you are is the only true way you will ever really know where you fit into the world around you.

By being at peace within yourself. Forgive and love yourself then nothing that any one says or does will impact you. By being nothing you become everything. Look after yourself first then and only then you can forgive and love another. We are imprinted to be powerless in this society and by recognizing you are a gift from the Creator then you are free to be who you are meant to be. Be empathetic not sympathetic. Read Carolyn Myss and where she describes the 7 archetypes. You are being vampirized by some one who wants your power. Be true to you. Being loved does not necessarily mean you are liked.Being personally responsible is all about you being all that you can be. By others imposing their will on you is them using power over you, stay away as karma is not far behind. "Time" is speeding up NOW so things are happening faster. Some famous book has a quote " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" this means with integrity, respect and never submitt to anyone. Only Surrender to The Creator and you will feel what you need to do.

It's simple really. After spending years of caring what others think, you will get to the point where it no longer becomes relevant what they say. You'll become a loner who hates everything and everyone and probably end up hating yourself. However it is better to care and not switch off to the world.Better to be a happy crazy than a mental crazy..

You should Disassociate from the people who you are trying to not care about. Be it all the people or just one. Like a doctor who disassociates with emotional contact with his patients and there life threatening illness. This allows to handle or deal with people in a non-emotional detached manner.

It seems that only juvenile teenagers judge ppl for the dumbest reasons. (jealousy most of the time...) So i tell my self that these children's opinion doent bother me becuae they havent been through enough in life to say anything worth while. Half of the time these teens are ignoramuses anyway.
As for adults, it hurts a little to be judged badly...but at the same time i try not to let me bother me because if an adult wants to act like a child then their opinion isnt worth crap to me anyway.truley good ppl dont judge negativly, if at all...so anyone else...tell them to kiss it!!!!!

It took me years not to care. I used to care A LOT but I care not at all what people think of me. I really don't. I'm just me and I can do what I want to myself and no one can stop me.

Hmmm kinda like having someone telling you over and over that pigs can fly .
Pretty soon, you're going to be tempted to look up.
A lot of it has to do with self confidence. Just beleive in yourself and your abilities. You'll be fine.

You are you. Noone can change you and noone is better than you. You have to believe that and love yourself before you stop caring what people think. People who love you will accept you for who you are. Forget everyone else.

You decide to value your own feelings and emotions more than you value others. Then follow your decisions and don't worry too much about what others think.
