Anime means animation. It wasn't made for adults, it is just that in other countries, tv isn't so censored. In Europe they have naked news and show sex scenes on public tv that we would consider pornographic. In Japan, where anime is made, or at least was originally made, they also do not censor what the children watch. We are the only society that tries to shield our children from everyday life.of adults. All societies have different norms, but the other ones teach their children to be like they are, ours shields the children from the real life around them.

Anime (short for "animation") is many times misunderstood by western cultures. The Japanese have different standards with which we live by, so certain controersial subjects to us are nothing to them, which is why many anime come off as "for adults," although kids may watch it. For example, we play Naruto and Inuyasha on Adult Swim, at nighttime, when in Japan it's on at primetime hours and is suitable for all ages.

As far as I know, it was not meant for kids. Anime takes the name from french. But the far meaning is in Latin. Anima means soul, anima is that which gives life.

anime is actually japanese word for animation. the japanese love to shorten english word. they shorten air conditioner as aikon in their vocabulary, radio control as rajikon, etc. and animation as anime. you see, in japan they made animation for both adult and children. just compare with cartoon such as tom and jerry, with it violence is it for kids?
so, to distinguish western animation and japan animation, the western animation called cartoon and japan animation called anime. it has nothing to do with the adult terms
