This goes to the suggestion, attributed by a Y! Q/R Answerer on the French list, to a commentator on a French Radio talk show "Grosses Têtes" citing Jules Ferry (19th Century Minister of Education, who is credited with the establishment of the right to free secular education in France): that instead of capital punishment, convicts should have their eyes gouged out.
I've been unable to confirm the attribution, and am still trying.

You have to be a little bit more specific, because some punishment can be worse than a death sentence. Usually punishment of any type only gets you short term results, most people who go through this often end up doing worse the next time because they feel like they have to pay someone back for the punishment.

Actually, the death plenty holds no deterrent factor whatsoever. Research has NEVER shown that enforcing a death plenty deters crime. (That doesn't mean we shouldn't enforce it, we should just be aware it isn't going to STOP crime, only that 1 criminal)
I don't think cruel and unusual punishment would be any different. You have to understand the factors behind crime to get a good picture of what prevents it.

No. It's unconstitutional to give someone a cruel and unusual death. Also being "cruel" would imply that the punishment is more than the person deserves for the crime.

I think they should bring back public execution for those found guilty of serious crimes.
That would be the ultimate punishment and deterrent.

Definitely yes. being tortured in the town square , healed, tortured ,healed ad infinitum. the fear factor has it's merits; Black jack pershing once executed twenty errant muslims by shooting them with bullets covered with pig grease and burying them with cut up hog parts. he had no more trouble with muslims.
