Throughout American history the political parties have shifted in what they stood for. It began with Federalists vs. anti-Federalists. One wanted a strong central government, the other wanted power to be vested in the states. They came to a comprimise and created a Federal Republic. Political parties were largely absent until the contest between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson's side said Adams wanted to establish a monarchy, which isn't true, and Adams side essentially said Jefferson wanted to establish an Atheistic society since he supported the French Revolution (which isn't really true Jefferson didn't control religious affairs while serving as President). Jefferson's group began whats called the Jeffersonian Republicans, where they moved the national capital to its present cite, at the time a very small swamp. You see, George Washington essentially wanted to build a new Rome, a mighty stamp of American government, so he preferred the cities of Philadelphia or New York for the capital, but Jefferson wanted a tiny national government. What really changed everything was the Civil War, when Abraham Lincoln greatly increased the power of the national government in order to keep the states in line. The first semi-modern Republicans and Democrats really began in force upon the administration of W. Wilson near the first World War. The Democrats in World War Two were probably more like the modern Republicans, and the Republicans in the Civil War were more like the modern Democrats. The terms Republican and Democrat largely depend on the state of the country though, there is no such thing as what a "Republican" absolutely means except when you take into account the context of the times.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you asking why these are our 2 parties rather than some other names? They have to be called something.
Are you asking why we have plitical parties? That's generally how democracies are. Name a democratic country that doesn't have at least 2 viable parties.
