well, i'm pleased that did their part to help sweep the neoCONS out of their absolute power position. no doubt if there had been a military draft hanging over their heads they'd be a bit more pro active but hey! the youth turn out was the biggest in 20 years so YAY for the kids!

now if only they'd get REALLY active in saving the planet they're gonna inherit. it's THE most important issue they face.

Sadly, I think people from my generation (I think we're classified as the Plastic Generation) don't really care about anything politics or current events that will have a major affect on our lives (though in my government class, our professor asked us what we could do to get today's youth more involved in politics and current events. Everyone in class wasn't paying attention and was kinda goofing off until I dropped the bombshell: compulsory military service. After that, their ears perked up and then the debates started.) Anyways, with all the sitcoms, reality shows, and the get-rich-or-die-trying attitude of the entertainment industry, it's gonna take something really drastic to get the youth involved like they should.

It's not just the American Youth. It is a world wide phenomena. One reason would be the high tech electronic gadgets which can entertain children from a young age in the home, and lets face it, it can be very addictive. The children keep up-to-date with all the latest gadgetry which in turn keeps them in doors for longer periods. The bikes don't get ridden anymore, they don't visit their friends and they don't want to go to work because they are trapped in a virtual life. It's going to take a while to turn things around.

We are not okay with it. But try to do anything as a parent and go to jail. Discipline your children and get arrested. Piss them off and the ACLU will help them divorce their parents. Our laws are just shy of forbidding us to pray! Our culture has become so materialistic, mom and dad have to work overtime to afford the ipods and plasma screen TVs and the SUVs and the designer clothes kids think they can't get caught dead without. Our youth are apathetic because we aren't allowed to teach them the fundamentals. Our schools are too busy teaching them to identify drugs and handing out condoms to be bothered with basic skills, like reading.

Because they don't understand how what happens today, will affect them tomorrow.

Specifically, the one word that should really piss them off is the word "deficit". That means that today's government is borrowing money and going into debt to pay for things like wars and tax cuts for the wealthy. Who pays it back? Not this government or this president ... that's the next guy's problem. And not my generation. It's the *next* generation that gets saddled with that debt. The word "deficit" means spending money today, and passing the bill onto your kids.

So a bogus "tax cut" for this generation, is *raising* taxes on the next generation.

If they understood that, they would be less apathetic.

Because all of the problems seem so very overwhelming. Instead of feeling inspired to do something about them, many young people feel as if they won't be able to affect enough changes to matter. That isn't true, but - I can understand why they feel that way.
