My husband's family tree is a cherry tree in the front yard of his parents' former home. We have tried gathering the pits and planting them but to no avail. If we can not figure out how to grow it from the pits we are hoping a cutting will be possible. We have permission from the current homowners to try to get what we need in order to be able to take this piece of his childhood and bring it to our home. How can we do this?? What is the best way?? Thanks....

Cherries are easy to propagate. You must take softwood cutting, take hundreds, which means you take cutting from the new growth before it hardens into what looks like young bark. Dip the cuttings in rooting hormone and place in shallow countainers that are filled with 1/2 sand and 1/2 vermiculite. These cuttings should be misted everday 4 to 5 times a day. After 4 months you should notice roots on them and they can now be planted in regular soilless planting mix. Have fun...I've done it many times.

Slice off a small branch with leaves, about 1/4 inch diameter, making sure to include a deep layer of bark. Keep the cut part in water and it should grow roots in a few weeks. Maybe take a couple of cuttings to make sure. Good luck.
