I study exactly this. I do not watch the news and have not for many many years. When one does not watch the news three things happen. They have more time for their lives, their stress levels go down and their awareness goes up. Why? Because when pummeled on a daily basis by things that are not affecting you one starts believing it is supposed to affect you thusly diminishing your ability to stay focused on what is important....the reaction is two-fold, your "fear-factor" is raised as is your stress level. Reading about things that interest you within a newspaper or online is a much better way to receive the news.... but remember: everyone within these environments are there to lead you on, shock and even lie to you...... to make money and perpetuate a motion of sickness, if you will. In other words, say the world, your community, your city or whatever is sick long enough, you'll start to believe it. let go. good luck.

Since media tends to report more bad news than good, one gets a disproportionate view of the world with examples that you cited. However, the other extreme of not knowing that these bad events do exist in watching the news gives the other disproportionate view towards one of Pollyannish.
Having said that, personally, I learn to develop a mental mechanism to filter out media's sensationalism towards being negativity and devoting more time seeking out the positive news as well as the statistics and factual information related to the bad news.

Pros' of never watching the news;
Ignorance is bliss. We can go about LIVING our lives without the input of calculated dosages of fear we are being fed by news machines.

Cons of not watching the news;
We won't hear about the approaching hurricane.

More pros than cons, that's for sure. Bad news has a way of reaching you, though. Don't seek it out.
