It is a Greek letter.
Mathematically it is a constant ratio. The actual value of it(as given by Leonardo Da Vinci) is 1.618.....
If you take all fibinacci numbers: 0,1,1,2,3,5,8.... and divide each by its predecessor you'll se that after a fixed number of terms the ratio becomes constant 1.618.....
1/1=1
2/1=2
3/2=1.5
5/3=1.666666
8/5=1.6
13/8=1.625
21/13=1.61538
34/21=1.61904
55/34=1.61764
89/55=1.61818
144/89=1.61797
144/233=1.618
so it becomes constant
This constant exists in everything that's beautiful in nature, even in humans. You can even check this ratio in your body check your height from head to belly-button(h). Then check it from the belly-button to feet(H).
You'll see H/h will be almost 1.618
Even your ears, fingers, teeth, toes....etc follow this ratio.

The golden ratio, usually denoted , expresses the relationship that the sum of two quantities is to the larger quantity as the larger is to the smaller. The golden ratio is the following algebraic irrational number with its numerical approximation:
The figure of a golden section on the right illustrates the defining geometric relationship. Expressed algebraically:
At least since the Renaissance, many artists and architects have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio—especially in the form of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio—believing this proportion to be aesthetically pleasing. The golden ratio also makes surprising appearances in nature[citation needed]. Mathematicians have studied the golden ratio because of its unique and interesting properties.
Other names frequently used for or closely related to the golden ratio are golden section (Latin: sectio aurea), golden mean, golden number, and the Greek letter phi (Ï).[1][2][3] Other terms encountered include extreme and mean ratio, medial section, divine proportion (Italian: proporzione divina), divine section (Latin: sectio divina), golden proportion, golden cut,[4] and mean of Phidias.[

phi is also known as the golden ratio. adjacent terms in the fibbinaci series approach phi as you take the series out farther & farther.
It also has th property that
phi-1=1/phi
phi=(1+sqrt(5))/2=1.6180339887498948482045868343656
it is irrational. There is no repeating sequence.

a greek letter.
people traditionally use it to represent a wave function in quantum mechanics, and also one of the angular coordinates in a "polar coordinates", and also as a "degree of freedom" in classical mechanics, and also as a "scalar field" in general relativity and quantum field theory.
