When looking straight down at the top of the distributor cap you will see a short leg jutting out sideways(this leg is where the 12V wire plugs in).The second sparkplug wire connection(goining clockwise from the leg) is the #1 sparkplug wire connection. The other advice as to rotor alignment given should include the fact that this"leg" should be around the 3 O'clock position(viewed from the front of vehicle looking rearward) .The rotor should end up around the 5:30 O'clock position just below #1 plug terminal.

Ok do this. remove the #1 sparkplug and stick your finger in the hole. YOU WILL NOT GET HURT AS THE PISTON WILL NOT CUT OFF YOUR FINGER. wHAT YOU ARE FEELING FOR IS PRESSURE. And bump the engine over in short burst untill you feel compression

Now look at the crank shaft and aline the timing marks untill it is at TDC ( top dead center)
Now remove the dist cap and look where the rotor is pointing . That is the #1 pistion.
Now install the plug wires in the following order
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
It should now atleast crank and fire.

Take out # 1 plug. ( the 1st plug on front of motor, Driver side) Take off dis. cap. Have someone sit in car and have them bump engine while you are holding your finger over the # 1 plug hole. You will be able to feel the compesssion.it will push your finger out Do it a few times so you will be able to tell when it is on its highest presure point. When it is at this point. The pistion is all the way up on compression. Look at your rotor button on your dis. Mark with a black marker where it is at. Place cap back on. The wire it is pointing to is your 1. The next wire on it,s right is # 8, and so on. Standing in front of you motor. The ciliders from front to back on left are 2 4 6 8. On the right are 1 3 5 7..the firing order is 18436572 in the direction the rotor turns while you crank the engine over. also the timing mark on the crank pully should be on the 0 mark on the scale on the timing chain cover ..don
