Does anybody know where I can find policies for Ontario Catholic Teachers in regards to their personal lifestyle ie. children out of wedlock, sex before marriage, same sex relationships?

Does anybody know any cases in canada that I can use as precedence for supporting the above?

Does anybody know how the policies differ for public school teachers?

I have heard of catholic schools terminating teachers based on their sexuality, based on their out of wedlock relationships, children out of wedlock and even of one women being fired for using IVF...anybody have any info on this

Just to clarify, I am writing a paper which states that teachers shouldnt be discriminated against, I am looking for cases where teachers have been terminated (and many have) based on something like same sex marriage, using IVF instead of natural birth, or having children out of wedlock. I am not despite what the person wrote below, trying to convince anyone that people should be discriminated against. I am trying to find a legal case that finds in favour of the person discrimated against to show that similar cases should follow suit.

Teachers working for the Catholic School Board in Ontario SIGN A CONTRACT agreeing to live their professional AND personal lives according to the basic standards of the Catholic religion. Teachers who do not wish to abide by the terms of a Catholic school contract should apply for a job in the regular school system. The right to dual school systems is entracted in the BNA Act (which basically created Canada). I don't believe it's fair, and I definitely think it's antiquated and out-dated, but it's a fight that should be fought from the outside. It's ridiculous for teachers to sign a contract that they plan to break. Teachers are professionals and breaching contracts is extremely unprofessional.

In private schools, like Catholic Schools, you can be fired on the spot for ANY reason they want, as long as it specifically is not against the law (for example, firing a teacher because they are black; that is illegal). Heck, I've seen Catholic teachers fired because they didn't go out and sell candy on the weekends for their fundraising promotions!

As for public school teachers, the situation is very different. I know that in the USA many states (most) have "tenure" laws to protect teachers from firings like this, because teachers face soooooo many conflicts with kids and parents, that not a day goes by without some kind of disagreement or arguement. That's why tenure laws are necessary. To protect the teachers from unfair practices regarding their jobs. And in the public schools, in general, what you do at home is your own business. Now if you commit a felony, that's a different matter, because most states won't allow felons to keep their teaching certificates, and thus they can't teach anymore. I imagine it's the same way in Canada, but I am not sure about their legal system.

It would not surprise me in the least, in either country, that Catholic schools in particular would fire teachers for the reasons you have mentioned. And I'm 99.99% sure it is perfectly legal to do so. That's why they're called PRIVATE schools>>>they can do anything they want!

AND they do....I've seen it here in the US!

Like Jetgirly says above, if you don't like it (Catholic schools), then LEAVE......

Give her the 10 points.

I just skimmed the article and noticed it's an American problem not a Canadian problem. People have to remember that in Canada we are more open minded including the Catholic schools. Nobody cares about another person's lifestyle in Canada. However if the teacher is something like a repeated child molester then everyone has the right to look at him/her and ask what their problem is with them as an individual.

Honey, I know what you are trying to do and as great as it may sound, it's not legal. Teachers cannot be fired for what they do in their personal lives unless it intertwines with school activities. Which would mean the teacher would have to be having sex in the classroom, bringing her baby to school, or hold lectures on same sex relationships. Just like your boss cannot fire you for what you do in your personal life, the principal cannot fire the teacher.

I also feel compelled to tell you that it is not for you to judge others on your high moral standards. Although I think it is great that you have them, it's not great that you choose to force them upon everyone else. We all have different views and with the wide diversity we have in this world, it might be easier for you to try and learn a little tolerance rather than carry on this crusade of self rightousness. We are not all perfect, nor will we ever be.

I went to Catholic High school In Canada................... while I was pregnant with my daughter. I was unwed and 16...... I finished the last month at home and return the next year. My daughter was born the end of may. Two years later her dad and i were married in a Catholic church!
Teachers are not fired or penalized in any way for their personal life. I am a foster Parent with Catholic Children's aid and They don't punish you for those reasons........... sexuality, unwed or otherwise....
