My 5 yr old has atopic dermatitis (a type of eczema). She was diagnosed at 2 weeks old. Our doctor told us to not use lotion but vasaline. Bathe her in lukewarm water no longer than necessary. No baby powder. I used Dreft (baby laundry detergent) to wash her clothes. Put mittens on her hands to keep her from scratching herself. All of these things definitely help. Good Luck.

Ok, I don't know if your Dr will prescribe this for you or not, but my first daughter and my second daughter both had eczema on their face. The dr said it would go away with the cortisone cream within 2 weeks. It never did, so I had some prescribed diaper rash cream and I put that on the rash VERY thinly and only twice a day, once in the morning, and once at night after her bath. This was called CELESTODERM....it took the eczema right away (within a months time) and it never ever ever came back. By the way, the girls were both approx. 1-3 months when I did this. They are 4 and 2 now. Also, Huggies baby wipes (unscented) helped too, something in them seems to soothe the itch I think.

My first little guy had eczema and here is what the Dr told us:

Eczema is extra dry, extra sensitive skin. So avoid washing her face more then you have to because it's drying and use a natural baby soap without sulfates and use Cetaphil as a cleanser between baths.. Most lotions make it worse, even "sensitive" ones but aquaphor worked for us unless our son's skin was totally raw then just vaseline.. Her own sweating will irritate it so don't overdress her. Hmm...; some other irritating things:

Smoke (or smoker's clothes against her skin)
Pet hair
Sometimes milk formula
fabrics (dress her in cotton)
detergent (try Mountain Green)
dust
Her spit
Her scratching (keep nails short)

The Dr said half of kids outgrow it by 3, and our son did at two. I nursed him til 18 months and didn't feed him wheat or cow's milk til it cleared up.
He warned us that prescription eczema creams like Elidel and Protopic can cause certain skin cancers, just a heads up for the future. Hang in there Mama!

Breastfeeding is the best for eczema, in fact 6 mo of it can prevent many cases. But go easy on common allergy foods in your diet like milk, nuts, dairy and seafood.

A lot of kids get eczema. Most outgrow it and some will continue to have it throughout their adult life. Besides the creme, you can make sure she doesn't scratch her face. It's bad now because she has scratched. If you have to, trim her nails really short and/or have her wear gloves.

You could use Aveno lotion they have a special kind just for eczema and vaseline works great to. Some kids grow out of it. She may just get it in other places. And don't bathe her every single day that will dry her skin even more.

my babygirl has it too, I use Aveeno for babies, works great, but yes you can also ocontinue to use Cortisone 1% and Eucerin cream/lotion as well. The aveeno works great, avoid the eyes though. I haven't used any of the other products but am speaking from experience as I am currently still using it as she has little outbreaks here and there.

My daughter had eczema on her face also. It cleared up in a couple of weeks using the cream and it didn't come back as long as I used the cream. She is fine now, we haven't used medicine in four years and it hasn't come back.

Oatmeal baths will help, and won't harm her either at such a young age.

Oh, and I think eczema is a lifelong condition, but I may be wrong. I think it can be treated, just not cured.

a dermatologist should be the one answering your questions here. I'm not trying to put you off, but with a baby, if it's done right, it might go away. If you try stuff people tell you on the internet, you might be wasting precious time.

march right over to a dermatologist (get your doctor to recommend one - insurance usually requires this) and get that li'l pretty face back on track.
