I for one hate the fact that they don't make animated motion pictures anymore. the only reason disney gained so much fame is because of their animated films.

it's true that CG is "in", but they do seem kind of lifeless compared to Disney's past work. CGI films such as finding nemo, incredibles, cars, etc. just don't have the same charm of the good ol' days where disney used hand-drawn animation to tell their stories.

Am i the only one that notices this?

What does everybody think?

The artistry of cartoons is yet another dying art form that has succumbed to the age of the computer. If you walk down Main Street USA at Disneyland, there is a little cartoon studio near the ice cream shop with an artist sitting at his desk near a window. He draws cartoons all day. It is wonderful to watch. It makes me sad to think that the true artists of the world have been replaced or upgraded by machines.

Times move on and they have to keep the costs and time limits realistic if they are to compete with the 'new boys' like Pixar and Aardman.
The Disney studios definitly push the envelope as to what computer graphics can achieve (the undersea effects in Nemo or the hair in the Incredibles, for example). There are still certain times when hand drawing will be used to create a particular feel or depth of color but broadly speaking computer generated animation (with very human voices!) is the only viable, affordable way forward.

CG is not easy at all... and it is definately not a cost cutting move.. CG takes a lot of people and a lot of time and a lot of money.

it's modernising... the standard animation is between 16 and 32 frames per second... that is a minimum of 960 frames per minute. that is a lot of drawing. And the coloring, and then lighting. And you can totally do that exact style in CG if you want to. SouthPark for example hasn't been cut-paper animation since (most likely) it's first year.

It's nice to be traditionalist but when you are trying to entertain children who play almost lifelike video games a giant dinosaurs in a flourescant 3-d universe, flat 2-d hand rendered animation is useful only for it's entertainment value as historical artifact.

i am in the same boat as you. the disney of old had THE best artists. with that comes real talent and skill. HAND DRAWN!!!! it does not matter anymore though. financial gain is more important than the love for anything nowadays. i actually boycott disney products. (all the original is ok to be passed on to future generations. the new stuff however should be burned. give or take a few things here and there.) i think disney corporate big wigs are actually neo-nazis.

I think that they should keep up with the animated ones as well as the computer imagery ones. Keep the old but try new ones as well. I love the old Disney classics such as Snow White and Dumbo, etc. I really thought that the Cars movie had a good storyline to it though. I just don't want to see all of the "modern" style movies though.

I don't think Disney should abandon traditional hand drawn animation, but CG does have it's place in animation today. Animation is in another state of flux right now, but good stories and character development are two ways of preserving the art form. Also CG is improving in its techniques.

Its not just Disney. Its probally every studio. With annoying CG movies once every month (with only probally 2 of them are actually good per year). We truly are slowly abandoning the old traditional ways of animation. Even direct to video/DVDs are becoming rampant with more even crappier CG movies. With ridiculous stuff like hearing what new CGI movie is coming up for next month along with annoying promotions for it. I am lucky that i have moved foreward to watch more Japanese animation.

It was coming as early as Aladdin, y'know. The whole 'cave of wonders escape' was CG...

If its any consolation, at least their movie sequels and tv cartoons are drawn. Also, the Miyazaki films they've bought were drawn....not that those really count as "Disney"s

I'm miffed that they haven't done any great musicals lately! What happened to the days of the characters randomly breaking into highly-choreographed musical numbers?!

That's the downside of technology. It gets faster, cheaper, and easier than past works, and Disney is about one thing and one thing only- money. They are no longer interested in creating a great work of art like they once were; then again, society is to blame for that also, because we aren't willing to shell out the money that works like that are worth. Who sees the movies in theaters now, when we know we can rent them for a fraction of the cost in a few months or so?

It is a shame in a way.....Time and money is what it comes down to....while I certainly understand your sentiments on many levels.........technology has paved the way for less thought process and quicker results.
I don't think people understand what the process of real hard work and dedication were then compared to now. Life has been made easier because of technology.....and technology has taken the romance out of life. No doubt about it!
