I try to be real. The older I get the more real I feel I can be. I'm more comfortable with myself, therefore I feel I can be more comfortable with people around me.
If I need to, I will tell it like it is. I actually got in a fight with my sister for the first time in our adult years because she misinterpreted my words and turned them all around. I wasn't about to have that.
So when I need to be, I can be phoney, but I try to be real.

Minor changes in behavioral styles in different social situations is a valuable social skill. It is not "faking" anything. For example, I shave and put on a shirt and tie before going to work. I am extra polite to customers and coworkers. This keeps the peace and keeps the pay checks coming in. That's a survival skill.
Without it, your only survival tool is open hostility to everyone who oposes you. But that doesn't work because there's ALWAYS a bigger fish.
It's just a matter of style.

You always have to be fake to some people to get through life. There are certain ways to act in certain situations. For example, a Police Officer, Co workers, a priest, you friends parents. If I always Kept it Real, every one would think Im ghetto.
I just read all of the answers and the only people who "kept it real" were the guy above me and myself.

keep it real !!! i also tell it like it is to everybody but if you're like me in any way, people can't stand me cause my speck my mind, unfortunate my brothers have a real problem with and i really don't care, cause I'm going to say what i feel like are not!! I'm glad 2 hear someone else tells it like it is 2 now i feel better that it's not an issue with in myself!

I keep it real i don't like fakes because w/ fakes comes drama and i really hate drama.I'm one of those straight forward people.

I am like an opened book. I DON'T know HOW to be fake. I didn't learned it yet. And it's not in my personality.
