The word goth comes from the age in art where painting were done in darker color and also the buliding were done with different types of archways. Now the the cause of Sleepy Hollow I believe that it refurring to the fact that the story has dark elements and is set in the victoran ages when the goth art was starting to become popular.

gothic also refer to victorian, witch is the style of the day, such as cloths, speach, education,etc
