For the beginning of the Month of November Canada honours and remembers the sacrifices of their troops by wearing them. It leads up to Remembrance day (Veterans Day) Poppies have been the symbol since World War 1 and comes from the poem In Flanders Fields.
Montreal Canadiens locker room use to have a line from the poem on the wall "To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high."
With the GM's meeting in Toronto this week I guess a bit of the culture has picked up. and all Canadian coaches would wear one if they come across it.
