First of all your only 17, don't get ahead of yourself even if everyone else is spoiled.

The main thing to consider is you parents credit... a car has the biggest effect on a credit score next to a mortgage, and its a loan that will be open for years. Even if they do think you deserve a new car you need to think about the sacrifice they would be making by signing for it. Depending on their situation it might prevent them from getting a new house, credit card, or a new car for themselves.

I don't think you need an actually new car at 17, but a nicer car you might be able to pull off.

There are bargains everywhere, and just about anything out there would be nicer than an 88 civic, so be real about it. You can get into a ton of nice late 90's sedans for cheap... cars that are still nice and modern, they don't seem as old as they might be. I'd recommend 4-doors too, your 'rents will appreciate the cheaper insurance.

Search some on line sites for sedans under $10k, you will find Acuras, BMW 325i's, Lexus ES & GS's, etc... lots of impressive cars that will look sharp without breaking the bank.

As for getting out of your Civic, tell them it's not safe. If I had a kid who had a car that honestly was not safe I'd feel pretty bad. TOo bad its a Honda, as its prob running just fine =)

It is possible that your parents cannot afford a newer car. Kids cost lots of money even when they aren't driving. When I was in highschool in the early 80's I had to make do with an old farm pickup. 67 chevy.

Show them you are responsible enough to work for what you need, and save up and buy your own car. Be glad you are going to college, and drive whatever will get you there, used car, etc. Some don't get that chance. You have plenty of years after college to worry about how to get a new car.

You don't need a new car. You don't deserve a new car.
Buy a few spray cans of flat black primer and spray the whole car. Then get some red and yellow and paint flames on it.
You'll have the coolest car in school. And a personality all your own.

Don't pressure your parents for something YOU want. Do what it takes to get it yourself. I went through several used "clinkers" before I was able to buy a new one for myself.

instead of convincing them verbally, work for it. show them good grades, help them with the chores, etc that will please them. show them that you are worth getting a car.
