It's not about being effeminate. You're just not used to something so different and unique.
That type of singing is called falsetto, and it's extremely difficult. It made Mariah Carey famous, because nobody else at the time was able to control their vocal chords in that upper octave the way she did.
Groups like the Bee Gees and Earth, Wind & Fire were demonstrating absolute mastery of their voices as an instrument. Their style was full and ritch. Many of their songs took advantage of the whole range of the voice from low to high, and everything in between. They incorporated many unusual techniques such as the falsetto and even scat.
If you want to enjoy that type of music, you've got to get out of your egocentric mindset and listen to it for what it is: pure music. I strongly recommend you buy and Earth Wind & Fire CD and listen to the whole thing. I promise you'll find some songs you'll never forget!

How about "Boyz 2 men" and Al Green,Roy Orbison, Wayne Newton, they are all great! Male tenors have been famous always, rich tone yet high notes, that's a pretty great combination! And Peabo Bryson "can you stop the rain" That's appealing! And it's not effeminate, it's a talented male singer! Even canaries that hit the notes way up there are MALES.

Hmmm...well I believe that some women like men with effeminate voices because they basically sound like a woman. Alot of women like men that can relate to them in even the strangest ways. Have you ever wondered why all the gay guys have the women hanging around them? Well they act like a women and can seemingly understand a woman better in some people's opinions. To some women it could also be a turn on. Why? I don't know. It just depends on who the person is for THIS kind of reason. lol Well, I hope that I've helped you if even in a small way.

I agree with Vinster there are a lot of great falsetto pitched singers...and why are ppl so impressed by them?...Well, because its truly is impressive for a man to carry notes at such high pitches...Even more recent singers are admired because of this...Axl Rose, Steven Tyler, Chris Cornell just to name a few. Can't we just all agree that is the differences that make music and vocalists great and unique?

Do you mean when they sing with that whiney head voice? Ugh, I'm glad that phase didn't stick. I think men should sing with men's voices, and women should also sing with women's voices.

That's music they make for inmates in prison. They can't be around women so they like to hear that kind of music when they rape new convicts. Or so I've been told......
