It has to do with the phenomenon of shared and private attention.I notice the difference when I am sharing a perspective with someone, like watching TV, If the others are distracted or preoccupied,it seems to get in the way of my focus, and I can't seem to concentrate. When you are focusing your attention in a private way, others cannot "jam your frequencies".This is part of the second perspective.

Could it be that you don't get to watch what you want, when others are watching the boob tube, so you back off until you can watch what you want without confrontation?
