what happens to the ball's velocity while the ball is in the air?

Upward it will decrease, then as it falls back down, it will increase.

a ball thrown in the air vertically will slow down due to gravity and air resistance. so with an initial velocity v = any number the ball will slow to a velocity of v = 0 and then change dirrection so that the final velocity is the opposite of the initial veloctiy that is v = -1 * Vinitial
