No. His Republican party cost him his US Senate seat. And that Webb was a good candidate.

Given how close the race was (about 7000 votes out of 2 million), it's not unreasonable to assume that at least that many people were turned off by the "macaca" comment and the other racial fubars he made during the race.

However, I think he'd already lost his shot at the Presidency, even if he'd won. The race was quite close even without his foolish comments on race, and one generally has to win decisively to be considered a viable Presidential candidate.

No, I don't think so. I think the neocons ruined the chances of a lot of Republican candidates, people were just looking for a change. This country is SO frustrated!
And Webb was the only type of candidate who could win in Virginia - a traditional conservative with substantial military experience. I suspect he really won the race in tidewater, but who knows?
Plus, of all the Allen scandals I think his financial witholdings were the most damaging. We Virginians are used to racism, but nobody has much patience for a crook.

He lost the senate seat. They announced Webb the winner and I think that the Republicans might be hesitant to nominate him for president.

Not only that incident, but the fact he got angry when a reporter asked if his mother was Jewish. A simple yes or no would have sufficed. He didn't do that, he actually was offended by the fact someone asked if his mother Jewish. His racism caused his own destruction.

I really hope that people are not that petty. There are so many other reasons to overturn the Republican leadership. Dwelling on those kind of comments is just an effort to divert attention from what is really important.

It means clown in Spanish. The PC police were all over this one.

I think the first major step behind the Republican defeat is Bush not being able to defend himself from the barrage of lies and attacks by the liberal media.

Conservative voters did this one. They are in for a rude awakening by Pelosi and the gang.

Well, the margin was very, very thin. Who knows what caused 5-10,000 voters to change their minds?

yes, along with treating his jewish heritage like a dirty secret, using the n-word, and you know, putting a deer head in a black family's mailbox.
