It's called falling on your sword. People have been complaining about Rumsfeld and the aimless way the war in Iraq has been conducted. He should have been fired in 2004. After the Republican's monumental loss last night, Bush had to make a show that he finally gets it. Yeah, they said Rumsfeld resigned, but he was asked to resign to make it look like Bush is making a fresh start.

He has been pressured to resign for a long time due to the outcome of his leadership with the Iraq thing (no goals are being set or met), and now that the democrats are in control, they could have indicted him. Bush saw the writing on the wall and the two "agreed" it is time for a "new direction." So he basically got fired.

He knows that if he stays, he will be subpoenaed repeatedly. Liberals will badger him and keep him from doing his job. No sane human would knowingly put themselves through that.
