I've been playing for piano for a while. I'm wondering if there's any way you can play by ear because I always want to buy sheet music but my mom won't let me so I was wondering if I can find a way where I can just hear the music and learn how to play by ear.

I have sheet music for some songs. I was just wondering if you can play it by ear if you have the instrumental recording of the song.

Yea, you stick your head on the piano and start playing.

I've been playing piano ever since I can remember, and I can play by ear. I allways have. Even if it's a song I heard years ago on the radio, I can still sometimes remember it and play it well. It's a creepy gift I have. But I don't know how to read music well.
So how do I explain this... Well maybe you could listen to the song alot, and then try humming, singing, or whistling it constantly, even if it's just in your head. Get it stuck in your mind till you know the tune well. Then try going to the piano and hum each note of the song, one by one, and find the note on the piano that you're humming untill they're the same note. Try doing this for each note untill you can play the melody on the piano just as well as you can hum it, and then add the chords. You might need to listen to the song again and again to find what the right chords are. I hope that works. I'm sorry that you can't buy sheet music! Poor thing! Just listen to as much music as possable, esspecialy the songs you want to play, so that they'll be in your mind and pumping through your vains like a heartbeat.

Yes, but there's one problem. You really need a recording of the music you want to learn. That may be more expensive than sheet music.

Piano is such a complex instrument that you'd have to repeat certain parts on tape or cd until you figure out how to duplicate it.

In the mean time, try websites like half.com or amazon for used music books. You'll save a lot of money that way!!!

People who can play by ear really well have usually been playing for years and are blind or have autism or something. If you wanted to try it, you should start with some recordings of easy pieces, try to pick out the melody (main line), and go from there. Why in the world would your mom not let you buy sheet music?

Take it from a professional musician of 20+ years.

YES you can, and No I am not blind.

While it does take years of practice to make things easier, all popular music follow the same theory of music. All of it is based on scales, chords, progressions etc.

I can read music but in my profession I have not had to read for a number of years. Most of what I do is based on learning music by ear and improvising.

There are also a few good PC programs that allow you to slow down the song to learn the songs. The one I use for my students is called, RIFFSTER

Hope this helps.

There is- the easiest way to do it is to have your CD player/iPOD/music right next to you, start with 3 seconds then pause it and it takes patience. Basically just go back and forth between CD and piano until the notes you're hearing and the notes you're playing match.
If you like The Counting Crows, try their song "Colorblind" as a starter (if you need help on that one let me know) AIM is Magicmouse88

It takes years to be able to do that. Your mom is not being kind if she wont let you buy music. Sometimes you can find piano TABs online, and sheet music. I reccomend doing that. I would try to buy some though, it is important to learn songs.

hmm... I tried to do that... and it worked... although it's not as perfect as it would be with the help of sheet music... all you have to do is listen intently and observe how it is played, the key it is in and familiarise yourself with the song... from my experience, get at least the first 5 notes correct, and if you know the song by heart, you'll find the others the rest...good luck..

I can, but I have a very good ear, and musical talent pumping through my veins...music is the blood that pumps through my veins, people ask what would you do if you couldn't sing or play piano.guitar.saxophone...and I say MUSIC! I am music, I mean I would have other hobbies, but, I like being a little punk-rocker *satisfied smile*
