it could be anywhere - that isn't the point. He is making fun of all the stereotypes in the world. We try to discuss the whole
global issue as though there are no problems with it - but the fact is that there ARE cultural issues. I love his work and I think that there are a lot of things highlighted by it in a comedic way which we should take seriously.

Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world. That's part of the joke. It is an important country, but Sacha Baron Cohen is banking on the fact that Americans know nothing about it, and obviously that's a pretty safe bet.
By the way, Sweet Dragon, he's a Rhodes Scholar. He wrote his doctorate thesis on the role of Jews in the Civil Rights movement. I don't think he needs to go back to school. But that's just me.

I think he chose Kazakhstan because Cohen is taller than the entire population of that country. Their olympic basketball team's center is only 5'10" tall! Yes, Cohen carefully researched this fact before choosing Kazakhstan. Why?
If you wanted to pick a fight or make fun of somebody, would you pick the TALLEST person in the room? No, you'd pick the dwarf in the corner with a limp and a crutch.
What can Kazakhstan do to Cohen? They have no nukes and Cohen's arm reach can keep Kazakhstan's army at bay for months! What does Kazakhstan REALLY have going for it? Their biggest export are travel ads urging potential tourists...to ignore Borat.
Hope this helps,
:)
p.s. Kazakhstan SOLD all their nukes to pay for their anti-borat travel ads.

Dude, because he had to choose a small country from which he could come from and still be white. And have an outrageous accent. Kazakhstan is in easter Europe, so it is far away from the US and foreign to us Americans. It is a perfect choice if you ask me.

I don't know why borat is such a big sensation, I don't think he is the least bit funny or entertaining. It just appears to me that the intelligence level of young Americans is so low these days that they are easily entertained by anything and anyone.

Because those who are putting him in front of the media, and serving him as a funny product think that Americans are a damn collection of idiots, and do not deserve more than this silly guy to entertain them by making fun of other countries they never heard about. It could be also that they want to present genuine peoples to the American public as being funny animals...
This guy needs to go back to school.

QUESTION: Why does he do it?
ANSWER: Because people pay to see his movie.
QUESTION: Why do Americans pay to see his movie?
ANSWER: To make them feel better, by thinking that some other country just might have people who are even dumber than the moron president that the US has.
